Maxxout
It's Breakout... TO THE MAXX!
Actually, it's pretty chill. Maybe I should have called it Chillout? Created for the inaugural 20 Games Challenge Jam, this version contains one simple base level and is a proof-of-concept for a potentially larger game.
In Maxxout, you have four paddles around the outside of the screen, each of which is a different color. In the center are blocks of four matching colors. Each time the ball hits a block, it changes to that block's color. You can only hit the ball with the paddle that matches the ball's current color. Simple!

YES, I FINALLY WON!!! Only took me 1.5 hours, but now I am the Master Of The Maxxout!
In all seriousness, good job! I loved the old school graphic style, particle effects and the warping through space background. Audio was strong too. At first I really sucked at the game and felt it was too hard. But after a while the challenge of it grew on me. If found myself improving rapidly and getting more and more into a state of flow. I found I couldn't stop until I finally cleared the level.
I cannot believe you spent 1.5 hours playing! That means a lot to me. Seriously, glad you found the experience so engrossing. I'd like to expand the game and ramp up the difficulty a little more gradually, I hope you'll try out any future versions!
Great idea! This was a really cool spin on the breakout formula.
Some small feedback, it would be nice if the menu could be controlled by both WASD & Arrow keys like in game can be controlled, or allow the use of the mouse but I know that requires extra logic. Whereas you can set both W & Up arrow to a custom defined "up" input action and use that set action in both the menu and the game if you wanted to.
Also something strange to mention, my media controls on my keyboard also triggered the "rotate_left" action, very curious. Both volume up and volume down do this, may be something interesting to keep in mind.
Also, do you think it might be better to limit the rotation speed? I can hold down a direction and rotate ant a speed so fast it looks like a strobe light effect and the paddle_ring appears to be rotating in the opposite direction much like a car's tire on a highway lol
But very good game and a great idea!
First off, thanks for playing! And glad you liked it!
And yes, this is excellent feedback. There were some things I just didn't have time to finesse, and input was one of them. But once the jam is over, I will absolutely make the changes you suggest, because they make a lot of sense. Ditto with limiting the max rotation speed of the paddles. That never even occurred to me, but seems like a no-brainer.
I really appreciate the feedback, thank you!
